Privatizing the Post Office

I think there's a reason why @medman uses the U.S. postal service rather than FedEx or UPS or any other company. And it works pretty well. And yet, for some reason, the current administration is proposing to privatize the postal service, even though it's the only part of our government that consistently works well.
I wonder, what would happen to this awesome service if the postal service is privatized? Is it something y'all are thinking about?

  • They use USPS because it's the only one you need a warrant to search. FedEX or UPS can open your package if they suspect it. USPS cannot without a warrant. From my experience anything that gets privatized usually improves. Based on my ID experience or the comments of others the mail service could be improved. Compared to other countries though it works very well. Why not make it even better?

  • @Yaqui319 agreed. If the government wants to improve anything, why go after the one thing that is non-partisan and works pretty well already? But for some reason it is a real discussion they're having, so I really am wondering, considering that a private company can just open a package like @maryjanelover11 said, what would medman do if the only mail service was a private company?

  • @Yaqui319 @kmoles I agree with both of you. I don't think it should be privatized. It may improve a little if it is, but not enough to be worth it in my opinion. It already works pretty well. I doubt it will pass. The USPS is here to stay and to be honest they deserve it. Even during this corona bs they have been delivering pretty decently (knock on wood). I did read that some workers are claiming the USPS will be bankrupt by september but words are words. Sometimes they are empty. If people see a benefit to them of it going private they will push for that.... By the way the only time government wants to "improve" anything it usually means an improvement to their wallets. That's true whether you vote left or right. Government is not for the people. Its for itself. It doesn't matter who is in office. The eagle flies on.

  • Anyone interested in this topic should watch a recent Jon Oliver piece on USPS.

Would you rather get a Payday loan from one of the typical places, or from the Post Office? Yes, the post office used to be one of the country's largest banks. I, for one, trust them more than for-profit businesses.

  • Just vote guys. Orange Dumbsicle has it out for middle class people who check on our grandparents every day.

  • @MikeyC amen to that

  • Vote for who? Another douche that only cares about big corporations? Because those are the only candidates no matter what the election.

  • @maryjanelover11 "They use USPS because it's the only one you need a warrant to search."

Not entirely. If they smell weed coming from a package they can intercept it and open it without a warrant. Happened to a friend of mine who tried to have weed mailed to him WITHOUT a vacuum seal or mylar bag. The sender tried to hide it in a package of clothing and it didn't work. The post office called the cops on him, they went to his door and told him they found marijuana in his mail box. He simply denied any knowledge of it and closed the door in their faces. Nothing they could do except confiscate the bag since he was never actually in possession of it, plus it would take a federal officer to arrest someone for knowingly shipping or receiving illegal narcotics through the postal service.
